The Tag on Cigarette Packets is Misleading

It is high time to ponder upon the language of the tag reading silently ‘ Cigarette smoking is injurious to health’. We need to revise it from its language, its font, its size and color in order to really make it meaningful. Suggestions are solicited from our dear readers to suggest the right tag that expresses with all clarity and emphasis how dangerous is smoking.

Brevity is the soul of wit but not when someone is saying: “I kill you.” It is not injurious but it kills us. There may be a long list of things that are injurious to us but do not kill us. So, the word ‘injurious’ used in the tag is misleading at least after the recent developments in the field of pulmonary diseases.

One such disease is COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). COPD is a most frequent chronic respiratory disease and the 6th leading cause of morbidity and mortality, worldwide. It is projected that by 2020 it would be the 3rd leading cause of morbidity and mortality, worldwide due to increase in smoking rates. Yes, this article is worth reading.
