A complete guide to vaginal yeast infection


Most of the women ( 75 % – 90 % ) fall victim to vaginal yeast infection also known as candidiasis at some point or other in their life. Yeast is a variety of fungus that lives in association with some bacteria in the vagina of every women. The scientific name of this yeast is candida albicans. When the number of this particular yeast cells increase it creates various difficulties like itching, discharge, irritation, pain during urination, etc etc.But it is not usually serious and the treatment is simple. These symptoms intensify one week prior to menstrual period.

The bacterial cells that live along with candida albicans is lactobacillus acidophilus. This is a bacteria that keeps a check on the growth of yeast cells in the vagina. But, sometimes due certain physiological factors their numbers in the vagina gets imbalanced. Sometimes antibiotics, hormone therapy, pregnancy, diseases like diabetes or HIV infection might trigger the increase of yeast cells in the vagina.

It is highly advisable to visit a doctor once you come across any of the symptoms of vaginal yeast infections. Pregnancy test is a must in vaginal yeast infection in order to avoid medication detrimental to the health of the child. The general medicines that are prescribed are anti fungal cream, vaginal suppository and anti fungal tablets.

More over it is not a sexually transmitted disease, having unprotected sex with a partner having yeast infection may possibly increase the by very marginal amount the number of yeast cells in your vagina but most likely not the reason for your vaginal yeast infection. Probably there may be other reasons for it. Women  having no sex for a prolonged period may also develop symptoms of vaginal yeast infection.
